Italian President Sergio Mattarella visits refugee camps in Gambela

16 March 2016. The President of the Republic Sergio Mattarella visited Gambella, the hardest hit region by the exodus of refugees following the outbreak of the conflict in Suth Sudan. According to estimates, there are 350,000 refugees in Ethiopia coming from the war hit South Sudan.
During his mission, President Sergio Mattarella, accompanies also by the Director Ginevra Letizia, visited the Teirkidi Field, where the Italian Government has funded a project for the supply of safe water. This camp is home to almost 22% of the total number of refugees in the region for a total of 53,380 people.
Since it opening the Camp hosts mainly south Sudanese refugees from the southern provinces of Upper Nile and Jonglei. The predominant ethnic group in the field is that of the Nuer, whose main occupation is farming and pastoralism.
During the visit the President of the Italian Republic, Sergio Mattarella, reconfirmed and renewed the Italian commitment to the emergency refugees in the Gambella by announcing additional 430,000 Euro to UNICEF for the construction of the water distribution system in the village of Itang and 200,000 Euro for UNHCR activities in the education sector.
