ITALY GRANTS UNIDO 2.8 MLN EURO GRANT FOR THE GROWTH OF THE LEATHER INDUSTRY IN ETHIOPIA

The Italian Cooperation has been supporting, since 2002, the improvement of the leather Industry in Ethiopia. Until now, 13.5 million EUR have been allocated by Italy to this growing industry sector, vital to the Country's development. It is in the framework of the renewed commitment of the Italian Cooperation that a Memorandum signing ceremony was held this morning at the Ethiopian Ministry of Industry. The event has foreseen an contribution of the Italian Agency for Development Cooperation of 2.8 million euros to the United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO).
The main objective of the three-year initiative "Technical Assistance for the improvement of the leather Industry in Etiopia- New Phase" is to increase the competitiveness and production capacity of micro clusters, and small businesses in the leather goods sector. This phase of the initiative will lead to the maturation of the 4 clusters, and its 12 networks already formed, in the area of Addis Ababa, in the previous phase of the project, always financed by the Italian Cooperation. An important component of the initiative will be the improvement of technical and managerial capacity of the single companies, and to reach a formal organizational structure and coordination mechanisms at the cluster level through the consolidation of common strategies.
The agreement was signed by Giuseppe Mistretta, Ambassador of Italy in Ethiopia, and by Jean Bakole, UNIDO Representative and Director, at the presence of H.E. Tadesse Haile, Ethiopian State Minister for Industry, Mr. Antimo Campanile, Ethiopian Desk at the Italian Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, Mrs. Ginevra Letizia, Director of the Addis Ababa Office of the Italian Agency for Development Cooperation, Mr. Wondu Legesse, Director of the Leather Industry Development Institute (LIDI) and of various representatives involved in the sector.
