Italy renews support to the Health sector in Ethiopia: 8 2 MEUR Agreement signed

Addis Ababa – An official ceremony took place on November 10 (3.00 pm) at MoFED office, to sign a bilateral agreement between Ethiopia and Italy for the project “Italian Contribution to the Health Sector Development Programme (HSDP), 2010 - 2012”. The agreement was signed by H.E. Ato Ahmed Shide, State Minister of Ministry of Finance and Economic Development, on behalf of the Government of Ethiopia and H.E. Renzo Mario Rosso, the Ambassador of Italy in Ethiopia, for the Italian side. Representatives of the Ministry of Health and of the Italian Development Cooperation attended the event.

The ceremony marked the continuation of the cooperation initiative in the Health Sector which aim is to increase the coverage and to improve the quality of preventive and curative health services and to strengthen the capacity of generating and using strategic information (HMIS) in the Country.

The project “Italian Contribution to the Health Sector Development Programme (HSDP), 2010 - 2012” is financed with an Italian grant of Euro 8,200,000.

35% of this contribution will be directly managed by the Government of Ethiopia through its Channel 1b for the MDG fund as Sector Budget Support at the Federal Ministry of Health (FMoH); 43 % of this fund will be under Channel 2 of the HSDP dedicated to two regions of Ethiopia, Oromia and Tigray and the balance will be provided in form of technical assistance by the Italian Development Cooperation, under Channel 3 of HSDP to the FMoH.

For the Channel 1b, the Government of Ethiopia will ensure appropriate management of Funds according to the MDG Fund Joint Financing Arrangement. For the Channel 2, the funds provided by the Government of Italy are meant to complement the funds already provided by FMoH and by Regional Health Bureaus of Oromia and Tigray.

The project “Italian Contribution to the Health Sector Development Programme (HSDP), 2010 - 2012” is part of the Ethio-Italian Cooperation Framework 2009-2011 signed by the two Governments in April 2009.
