World Congress on Public Health: Special Session dedicated to Ethiopia

The 13th World Congress on Public Health will take place in Addis Ababa over the period between 23rd and 27th April 2012 and hosted by the Ethiopian Public Health Association (EPHA).

Today, 24th  April, at 2 pm the special session “Countdown to 2015 in Ethiopia” dedicated to the progress and challenges towards the achievement of the health Millennium Development Goals in Ethiopia will be held.

Ethiopia is making substantial progress towards the achievement of MDGs despite heavy disease burden and high poverty level spread throughout the country. In fact, a consistent decline was observed in under 5 mortality rate (from 204 to 88 per 1000 live births between 1990 and 2011) and in infant mortality rate (from 122 to 59 per 1000 live births in the same period), being on track to achieve MDG 4 by 2015. Furthermore, a general increase in coverage of key MDG-related interventions for disease control (MDG 6) was observed in the last years.

The Italian Development Cooperation is very pleased to have provided technical assistance to the realization of this special session and will continue to support future efforts undertaken by the Ethiopian Government towards the achievement of the health MDGs.
