TVET Colleges in Addis Ababa equipped and upgraded thanks to the Italian Cooperation
21/12/2010

Addis Ababa – An inauguration ceremony for the newly built and fully equipped classrooms, workshops and libraries at General Wingate and Tegbareid TVET Colleges took place in Addis Ababa on December 21, at the presence of H.E. Ato Wondwossen Kiflu, State Minister of the Ministry of Education (MoE) and H.E. Renzo Rosso, Ambassador of Italy in Ethiopia.

The ceremony presented the activities realized with the technical and financial support of the Italian Development Cooperation in the two Colleges, aimed at upgrading their facilities and improving the quality of the training offered.

The said activities were realized between 2006 and 2010 under the Project “Italian Contribution to the Education Sector Development Program (ESDP)”, agreed by the Governments of Ethiopia and Italy. The Project has a total of 28.5 million Euros, allocated by the Italian Government for: (i) capacity building activities for federal and regional educational institutions, (ii) the expansion of primary and secondary education, (iii) the improvement of higher education and, (iv) the consolidation of technical and vocational training (TVET).

The support offered by the IDC to the TVET, represents the main component of the Project. With a total allocated budget of around 15.5 million Euro, it is addressed to the improvement of 4 Colleges (General Wingate and Tegbareid in Addis Ababa and the Colleges of Dire Dawa and Dessie) through: (a) the rehabilitation of existing buildings and the construction of new classrooms, workshops and libraries, (b) the provision of equipment, books and other teaching materials and, (c) the training of teachers.
The objective is to elevate the 4 Colleges to reference institutions for the Country, in the front line in the realization of the nationwide TVET strategy which aims at creating “competent and self-reliant citizens and transfer demanded technologies to contribute to the economic and social development of the Country, thus improving the livelihoods of all Ethiopians and sustainably reducing poverty.”

The activities completed in General Wingate and Tegbareid TVET Colleges under the Project “Italian Contribution to the Education Sector Development Program (ESDP)”, have already contributed to an increase in the number of students in the two institutions and in a growing interest of the private sector for their graduates.
